AbEx is slowly making it’s comeback. It’s a quiet force, currently toying with scale and methodology, experimenting with a critical eye it’s conceptual limitations, or perhaps lackthereof. The new methods encompass the easy availability of technology. Monumental size is now not so much of a concern due to the internet’s accessibility, and artist’s use of it as a communicative medium for painting. How can you fit the meaning of the mark scaled down to an 8”x10” canvas, share it over the internet, and achieve the same results as an 8’x10’ painting seen only meaningfully in a gallery space? These are questions of today, these are things that are happening, less getting out in the world, less physically seeing, when the physical still and always will overpower any form of digitization. Abstraction is still a young art, AbEx even more so, and it’s full development is still to come.
